At Frontline Security, our team is growing, and so, we are always on the lookout for motivated and reliable people to join us. If you live in the Auckland area, and have experience working as a security guard, or if you’re looking for a role where your work will be valued and each day will present new and exciting challenges, this could be the industry for you!
It’s great if you’ve already experienced working in a similar role, but if you haven’t, we’d still like to hear from you. We do require that you have a Certificate of Approval (CoA) to work with us, but we provide in-house training to ensure you are prepared for anything that might happen on the job. To us, it’s more important than anything else that you have the 5 essential characteristics of a great security guard.
5 Essential Characteristics of a Great Security Guard
We contract to all kinds of businesses and individuals across Auckland and provide a variety of services, including security patrol, event security guards, alarm monitoring and home security. Our security guards are placed in businesses and homes where a high level of trust is required, for that reason, all our team members have to pass a criminal background check. We have also identified 5 characteristics that are essential for all of our team to have.
1. Physical fitness
Frontline Security is an equal opportunity employer. This means that we have a true respect for all people and would never favour or discriminate against someone because of their gender, background, beliefs or physical appearance.
Working as a security guard is a job that requires a certain level of physical fitness, so it is important for you to consider this characteristic if you would like to work in such a role. As a security guard, physical fitness is important, you’ll need to be prepared to be on your feet for long periods of time, carry out foot patrol, and work shifts over days, nights, weekends, and public holidays. It’s not for everyone, but if you’d like a job that challenges you, where you’re not stuck at a desk day in, day out, it could be perfect for you!
It’s a bonus if you have a full New Zealand driver’s licence, and your own vehicle, but this is not essential. So long as you are able to get to and from your shifts safely and reliably – that’s our number one priority.
2. Excellent communication
Excellent communication is crucial in everything we do. As a security guard, it’s a particularly important characteristic because we’ll require that you write daily reports, and communicate with the Frontline Security team, on-site staff, and the general public.
You’ll often be faced with situations that will require you to act quickly and communicate effectively to reach a resolution. You’ll need to be someone who isn’t intimidated easily, who is comfortable deescalating tense situations, resolving conflicts, and negotiating and mediating when necessary.
We also want you to have fun with your team! We want to make sure our security guards get on well, work well together, and have each other’s backs. Frontline Security began as a two-person business in 2015, our team is now over 100 strong, and we believe effective communication is an integral part of this. We also know that forming bonds with your fellow security guards is essential to feeling supported in your role, and feeling like you can voice any concerns you have on the job, so we want to encourage fun and comradery wherever possible.
3. Professionalism
As much as we encourage fun, our security guards are the face of our company, and they also represent the companies whose sites they work on, so one characteristic that is vital in our team is professionalism.
Our security guards must be well-presented, respectful, and alert – our team’s high standards of professionalism are what has made Frontline Security a success. You’ll need to bring your A-game, be on time every time, be able to focus on the little details, manage your emotions, and remain professional under pressure. You can read more about what our clients look for in a security guard here.
4. Resourcefulness
Security guards are often faced with difficult situations, need to make tough decisions on the fly, and remain calm under pressure. In an emergency, police and other emergency services may take twenty minutes or more to arrive on the scene. Our clients rely on our security guards to handle emergencies quickly and effectively.
For that reason, our teams receive first aid and CPR training, and are also taught how to conduct themselves in case of an emergency. Our best security guards are the kind of people that have an eye for detail, are prepared for anything, can adapt when the situation changes and can use their judgement and resourcefulness to resolve any issue that arises.
5. Integrity
The most important characteristic we look for in security guards is integrity. Our team must be honest and trustworthy so that our clients know their property and their people are in good hands.
We expect our security guards to uphold high standards of ethics and act with integrity, whether they are working as part of a team, or by themselves.
Being a security guard isn’t for everyone, but if you’re someone who would like a job where every day presents new challenges and opportunities for excellence, if you’re physically fit and looking for a job that will have you moving around, using your smarts, and your intuition, then we’d like to hear from you.
